Computer Services

Kuwait University Computer Center was originally established in 1971 with the installation of NCR 151 and IBM 3780 RBT. It rapidly expanded into a major computing facility leading to the acquisition of UNIVAC- 1100/62 mainframe system and several VAX - 11/780 computers in the early 1980s. Services were constantly upgraded through acquisition of new hardware and software. In 1986, the Center installed an additional medium range system IBM 4381.R14. In 1988 UNIVAC was upgraded to model 1100/72 and three mid sized VAX Computers (two VAX -8810 and one VAX-8820) were acquired. Just prior to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, VAX-6420 (with two vector processors) and DEC-5810 (UNIX machine) were under installation.

Kuwait University Computer Services Center (KUCS) is developed to meet the academic as well as the administrative computational needs of the University community. After the Liberation, KUCS chose IBM - ES- 9121/440 mainframe and VAX 9000/420VP super mainframe to replace the earlier equipment lost during the invasion.

On 11th November 1998, Computer Services Center (KUCS) successfully upgraded its IBM-ES-9121/440 Mainframe to an IBM 9672/R32 System /390 Enterprise Parallel Mainframe Server and released the new system for the administrative functions of the University. The new IBM- 9672-R32 mainframe is equipped with three high speed parallel processors and utilizes CMOS technology. It has 512MB of central storage and 90 GB of RAID-5 disk storage with 1024 MB cache built into the first dual processor disk controller.

IBM Mainframe supports a number of administrative on-line applications- Student Information System, Financial Management System, Payroll and Personnel Systems and other administrative functions. All users currently access the IBM Mainframe vis IBM - 3472-10 color terminals connected access the IBM- 3174 local and remote controllers. The system is connected with other remote campuses by IBM-3745-170 Communication Controller using Microwave links and leased lines provided by Ministry of Communication.

In January 1992, a VAX-9000/420VP super mainframe was installed to support academic computing and to provide super computing facilities for Scientific and Engineering research projects within the University. In February, 1999, VAX-9000/420VP was upgraded to ALPHA-4100 Super Server with 600MHz RISC processor giving tremendous computing power when combined with appropriate software. A large number of specialized software products and libraries covering a wide variety of Scientific, Statistical and Engineering application are installed to take advantage of high speed computing capabilities of the system.

A large number of VXT-2000 X- Window terminals are distributed in the faculties of Science and Engineering to access the Alpha Super Server. These terminals offer large screen workstation-like access to the super server. Over a dozen local area networks consisting of PCs and Mac Systems spread over Khaldiya campus are connected to Alpha Super Server via Ethernet running Local Area Networks in remote campuses are connected to the main campus Fiber Optic Backbones in all five campuses connected together by Inter campus Fiber Optic Network with a view to provide higher data rates for Multi-media communications and video -concerning across PCs to support massive amount of data flow generated by Research and Graduate Programs in the University.

In addition to providing necessary hardware and software support to PC/ Mac users. KUCS offers dialup, SLIP/PPP and other internet related services to students, employees and faculty members.
